Types of Punching Bags
Punching bags are the primary equipment after gloves for boxing training. Manufacturing companies are making different types of punching bags with varying weights, materials and sizes. They are usually filled with grains, sand, water and other materials. Outer covering is made from leather or vinyl. Leather punching bags are comfortable but expensive. On the other hand, vinyl bags are cheap but they cannot be compared with leather bags. These types are generally used for training:
Speed Bags:
Speed bags help fighters to develop timing, hand to eye coordination, rhythm and speed. These are small and filled with air, affixed to a rebound platform. Boxer can use variety of combinations using fists and elbows. You can hang this bag vertically, and horizontally.
Double-Ended Bags:
These bags are same like speed bags with only difference in size and material. Double-ended bags are hung with two tight coils between floor and ceiling. Boxers use these bags for building counter striking skills, dodging, swerving and coordination.
Slip Bags:
Slip bags or maize bags are filled with maize and help in boosting defense techniques especially improved head motion, and are used for dodging opponent’s punches. These are not suitable for heavy training.
Heavy Bag:
Heavy bags are ideal for muscle toning and strength. There are two types of heavy bags i.e. standing bags and hanging bags. Selection of bag depends on type of workout. Standing bags are portable and ideal for both punching and kicking workouts. Hanging bags are fixed to one place and are good for punching.
Uppercut Bags:
Uppercut bags are good for uppercut, jabing, curl punching and low quick burst of high and low punching training. You can mount uppercut bag horizontally but it’s not easy to move.
Body Opponent Bag:
Fixed on a weighted pedestal, body opponent bags are made from synthetic material. These are modern version of Chinese Wing Chun, the medieval quintain and target dummies.
Essential Boxing Equipment for Ladies
Women are training in boxing for fitness purposes and fighting contests. Boxing is an inexpensive sport. You can borrow boxing equipment from your gym but its unhygienic and mostly not as per your size. These are basic items that women should have when they are training:
Hand Wraps:
Your hands bones need protection against injuries and fractures. Hand wraps are basic defense against hand injuries. They support your wrists, knuckles, fingers and your entire hand. Hand wraps are made with canvas or elastic material. Buy hand wraps with 180 inch length so you have enough fabric to cover your hands. There are different techniques for wrapping your hand. You have to choose one technique which adequately supports your hand.
Gloves:
Gloves are essential to your boxing training. Buy your own pair of gloves as it’s not safe in terms of health to share gloves. You will need training/ sparring gloves and not classic bag glove. Bag gloves have thin padding which means they provide less protection. Training gloves are available weighing 12oz to 20oz. Selection of weight depends on your body weight like 12oz gloves are recommended for 147lbs or below. Size of the gloves depends on your hand size.
Mouthguard:
Mouthguard is needed when you are training with your sparring partner. It protects your teeth from direct impact of a punch. You can find mouth guard easily at any local sports store. Latest version of mouth guard reduces impact with high level efficiency.
Boxing Shoes:
Ordinary sneakers do not offer the grip which is required in boxing. You need a pair which is specifically designed for this purpose. Boxing shoes are lightweight, soft-soled and either high-top or low-top. High-top shoes provide more support to ankle.
Headgear:
When you are sparring at regular basis, headgear is essential. It protects you from concussion and other serious head injuries. Before buying a headgear, you need to check it for comfort, visibility and quality.
